Things to Bring to Class
LIFE JACKETS
✔ US Coast Guard-Approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are required at all times on the docks and water.
✔ A properly fitted, Type III PFD is recommended and meets NY State & Coast Guard safety regulations.
✔ We HIGHLY RECOMMEND bringing your own PFD for comfort and proper fit.
✔ The sailing school provides life jackets for those who don’t have one.
✔ Where to buy? Lifejacket sizing is based on student weight and can be found at Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, or Amazon.
SHOES
✔ CLOSED-TOE water shoes are required—flip-flops, Crocs, and sandals are NOT permitted.
✔ Non-skid shoes provide better stability and protect against splinters, sharp objects, and stubbed toes.
✔ A great budget option? An old pair of sneakers!
SUNSCREEN
✔ Apply sunscreen before arrival and send a labeled bottle for re-application.
✔ Sunscreen should be reapplied before and after each on-water session.
✔ If your child needs help applying sunscreen, please send spray sunscreen—instructors will not apply lotion.
HATS & SUNGLASSES
✔ Hats and sunglasses help protect against UV rays and glare.
✔ Recommended: A sunglasses retainer strap to prevent loss in the water.
CLOTHING
✔ T-shirts and shorts must be worn at all times.
✔ Recommended: A snug-fitting swim/quick-dry/rash guard shirt—loose shirts can bunch up under life jackets.
✔ Bring a dry change of clothes—you will get wet!
✔ Bathing suit: Students should wear a bathing suit under their clothing, as they may swim on hot days.
WATER BOTTLES
✔ Staying hydrated is essential!
✔ Bring water or diluted juice—please NO soda or sugary drinks.
✔ NO GLASS CONTAINERS!
TOWEL
✔ Label all towels with your sailor’s name.
BACKPACK
✔ Bring a tote bag or backpack to carry all of the above.
✔ Recommended: A waterproof or quick-dry bag to keep items dry.
